- Can't Connect To Your Organization's Activation Server
- Windows Is Activated Using Your Organization's Activation Service Windows 10
I got a Windows Activation Key but it says that I am activated via an organization. I got the key from my dad and he works with technology, so just as Windows 10 Organization Activation Key - Windows 10 Forums. So I'm getting an SSD later this month to use as my boot drive, and would do a fresh install and then activate it the same way. But somewhere along the line something happened, and when I went to check my Activation tab in Settings, under 'Activation' it says 'Windows is activated using your organization's activation service'. It means that the Windows installation is volume licensed. The previous owner’s company activated it when they were working. Volume licenses work for a specific period of time (180 days) after which they expire unless renewed. You don’t work there the Windows license will expire after a certain time.
Many Company usage KSM Server for activation and key management of all Microsoft Products. In this method, a single activation key activate multiple software copies but only which are part of their local network. Windows 10 was pre-installed when i bought this laptop. Now after creator's update i started getting a pop-up saying that my windows license will expire soon and that i should go into settings. There it says that 'windows is activated using your organization's activation service'.

Fix Windows Activation Error Code 0x8007007B in Windows 10
If you recently upgraded your computer or if you’ve just switched to a new Windows 10 PC, the most common errors you might encounter are the Windows Activation errors. This issue boils down to the Windows Activation server which has either failed to validate or recognize the license tied to the digital account. In this post, you will be guided on how to fix an activation error in an organization with an error code 0x8007007B. It contains this exact error message:
“We can’t activate Windows on this device as we can’t connect to your organization’s activation server. Make sure that you’re connected to your organization’s network and try again. If you continue having problems with activation, contact your organization’s support person. Error code 0x8007007B.”
Various computers are activated via the KMS licensing (Key Management Server) in organizations. Computers that are activated using this process do not get a permanent activation and has to stay connected to the organization instead for at least 7 months or 180 days. It is common in Pro and Enterprise versions that are deployed in bulk for at least hundreds or thousands of computers. So imagine a user with a personal computer in the office who decided to leave the organization but will still have an activated Windows key. And so to prevent that from happening, organizations use the KMS licensing. Another possible cause of the error is in case some user used an organization key and later on, the PC just got upgraded or downgraded to a version which is not compatible to that copy of Windows.
To fix this Windows Activation error, here are some suggestions that might help.
Option 1 – You can try connecting to the organization’s network and activate the computer. But before that, you need to first check if the computer actually belongs to an organization or not.
- Tap the Win + R keys to open the Run dialog box.
- Type “cmd” and hit Enter to open an elevated Command Prompt.
- After that type the vbs /dlv command and hit Enter to execute it.
- Next, check if the Product Key Channel says “GVLK”. If it does, then it means that your computer was activated using volume licensing.
If you’ve recently left an organization then it’s best if you buy another copy of Windows 10 and then change the license key. This time, make sure that the license key is for the same version of Windows. However, if it’s different, you need to format your computer.
Option 3 – You can try activating Windows 10 using a mobile phone
Activating Windows 10 can also be done using your phone. Just note that you have to call Microsoft to do so.
- In the Start Search box, type in “Slui 4” and tap Enter.
- Next, select your country and click on Next.
- Keep the window open and call the toll-free number of the country you’re from.
- Afterward, a confirmation ID should be given by the automated system which you must take a note of.
- Finally, in the box on the window, type in the confirmation ID and click on the Activate button. That should do it.
Option 4 – If you think that the issue is caused by some hardware changes, you can try using the Activation Troubleshooter. There are times when users already have the license keys and were able to activate Windows. However, it doesn’t last long and only works for a while and it’s suddenly throwing up an activation error like this one. To use the Windows Activation Troubleshooter, just go to Settings and to Activation and then run the troubleshooter from there.
If you’ve made some modifications in your hardware, you have to click the “I changed hardware on this device recently” option for further suggestions.
That should resolve the issue. Looking for retail activation?
There are three possible scenarios for volume activation of Windows 10 or Windows Server 2012 R2 by using a Key Management Service (KMS) host:
- Host KMS on a computer running Windows 10
- Host KMS on a computer running Windows Server 2012 R2
- Host KMS on a computer running an earlier version of Windows
Check out Windows 10 Volume Activation Tips.
Key Management Service in Windows 10
Installing a KMS host key on a computer running Windows 10 allows you to activate other computers running Windows 10 against this KMS host and earlier versions of the client operating system, such as Windows 8.1 or Windows 7.Clients locate the KMS server by using resource records in DNS, so some configuration of DNS may be required. This scenario can be beneficial if your organization uses volume activation for clients and MAK-based activation for a smaller number of servers. To enable KMS functionality, a KMS key is installed on a KMS host; then, the host is activated over the Internet or by phone using Microsoft activation services.
Configure KMS in Windows 10
To activate, use the slmgr.vbs command. Open an elevated command prompt and run one of the following commands:
- To install the KMS key, type
slmgr.vbs /ipk <KmsKey>
. - To activate online, type
slmgr.vbs /ato
. - To activate by telephone, follow these steps:
- Run
slmgr.vbs /dti
and confirm the installation ID. - Call Microsoft Licensing Activation Centers worldwide telephone numbers and follow the voice prompts to enter the installation ID that you obtained in step 1 on your telephone.
- Follow the voice prompts and write down the responded 48-digit confirmation ID for OS activation.
- Run
slmgr.vbs /atp <confirmation ID>
.
- Run

Key Management Service in Windows Server 2012 R2
Installing a KMS host key on a computer running Windows Server allows you to activate computers running Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2008, Windows 10, Windows 8.1, Windows 7, and Windows Vista.
Note
You cannot install a client KMS key into the KMS in Windows Server.
This scenario is commonly used in larger organizations that do not find the overhead of using a server a burden.
Note
If you receive error 0xC004F015 when trying to activate Windows 10 Enterprise, see KB 3086418.
Can't Connect To Your Organization's Activation Server
Configure KMS in Windows Server 2012 R2
Sign in to a computer running Windows Server 2012 R2 with an account that has local administrative credentials.
Launch Server Manager.
Add the Volume Activation Services role, as shown in Figure 4.

Now that the KMS host is configured, it will begin to listen for activation requests. However, it will not activate clients successfully until the activation threshold is met.
Verifying the configuration of Key Management Service
Windows Is Activated Using Your Organization's Activation Service Windows 10
You can verify KMS volume activation from the KMS host server or from the client computer. KMS volume activation requires a minimum threshold of 25 computers before activation requests will be processed. The verification process described here will increment the activation count each time a client computer contacts the KMS host, but unless the activation threshold is reached, the verification will take the form of an error message rather than a confirmation message.
Note
If you configured Active Directory-based activation before configuring KMS activation, you must use a client computer that will not first try to activate itself by using Active Directory-based activation. You could use a workgroup computer that is not joined to a domain or a computer running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2.
To verify that KMS volume activation works, complete the following steps:
On the KMS host, open the event log and confirm that DNS publishing is successful.
On a client computer, open a Command Prompt window, type Slmgr.vbs /ato, and then press ENTER.
The /ato command causes the operating system to attempt activation by using whichever key has been installed in the operating system. The response should show the license state and detailed Windows version information.
On a client computer or the KMS host, open an elevated Command Prompt window, type Slmgr.vbs /dlv, and then press ENTER.
The /dlv command displays the detailed licensing information. The response should return an error that states that the KMS activation count is too low. This confirms that KMS is functioning correctly, even though the client has not been activated.
For more information about the use and syntax of slmgr.vbs, see Slmgr.vbs Options.
Key Management Service in earlier versions of Windows
If you have already established a KMS infrastructure in your organization for an earlier version of Windows, you may want to continue using that infrastructure to activate computers running Windows 10 or Windows Server 2012 R2. Your existing KMS host must be running Windows 7 or later. To upgrade your KMS host, complete the following steps:
- Download and install the correct update for your current KMS host operating system. Restart the computer as directed.
- Request a new KMS host key from the Volume Licensing Service Center.
- Install the new KMS host key on your KMS host.
- Activate the new KMS host key by running the slmgr.vbs script.
For detailed instructions, see Update that enables Windows 8.1 and Windows 8 KMS hosts to activate a later version of Windows and Update that enables Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 KMS hosts to activate Windows 10.
